They’re everywhere. Every entry level and up market makeup line is now providing their own version of them. You’ve seen them a thousand times, but do you know what it can do for you makeup routine? BB usually stands for blemish base, blemish balm or the nicer sounding beauty balm. But seriously, what the eff is it! And why should we be using it?

Well BB creams originally began in the 1960’s by German dermatologist Christine Schrammek and was developed further in the 1980’s by the Eastern market. BB creams are basically an all-in-one facial cosmetic product to replace serum, moisturizer, primer, foundation and sunblock.

While that sounds amazing (and sounds like it could really cut down on our work morning routine), we here at WeddingDates are a bit skeptical. How can one product provide you with so much AND give us the coverage we need? And while we know BB cream may not be enough for full on wedding day make up, could it give us good pre wedding day detox makeup (and possibly good honeymoon sun holiday cover?).

Because we’ve always been makeup voyeurs here at WeddingDates, we’ve scoured the internet and the shops for the best of the best in BB cream coverage.

The Investment: Jane Iredale Glow Full Time Coverage Mineral BB Cream

We love any Jane Iredale products here at WeddingDates. They’re mineral makeup is genuine divine and perfect for special occasions (like, um weddings!) so we’re going out on a limb to say this will be just as amazing. They’re makeup line is fantastic for hiding scars or blemishes (or scars from blemishes) but is harder to find than a Wally. We found ours by accident at our local beautician but try they also have a shop online. http://shop.janeiredale.com/products/mineral-foundation/15701-glow-timetm-full-coverage-mineral-bb-cream-bb1.htm

This makeup is perfect if you’re looking to invest in a high quality product and judging from all their other products, is worth the spend (if I’m wrong, I’ll eat my hat…. I don’t own a hat).

The First Try: L’Oreal Magic Skin Beautifier BB Cream

L’Oreal usually do half decent reasonably prices products (I still make out that Match Perfection is one of the best foundations out there for under 15 squids) and Magic Skin Beautifier for what is, is fine. If you don’t expect much from this product, it’s not a disappointing buy. It’s quite light weight which is perfect for a detox tinted moisturizer kind of look (perfect if you’re face is fairly flawless) but other than that it only has 4 shades, not great for the porcelain beauties and isn’t going to cover everything up nicely like our friend Jane. But if you’re looking for something to cover up your skin kissed skin on your holiday evenings it’s great!

Best All Rounder: Garnier Skin Renew Miracle Perfector BB Cream SPF 15

Apparently Garnier had a cream before this (missed the boat on that one) but this version is perfect. Great for more oily skin types with a medium coverage. Only available in 2 shades – light and medium, darker skin tones will unfortunately be out of luck. Coverage with this guy is also strong enough to provide decent light daily wear, which is great for your post wedding day au natural look! Give this one a go for sure, it gets our two thumbs up!

Try any BB creams out lately?
