Located in the centre of Rye, East Sussex, the hotel was recently renovated to create one of the most stunning hideaways on the south coast. The building dates from 1575 and has enviable heritage; it even has an original Georgian ballroom used for lavish weddings and banquets.

Set in the middle of the cobbled High Street in the medieval town of Rye, on the East Sussex/Kent border, and just five minutes from the vast sandy beach at Camber, The George is a Grade II listed 4-star hotel and wedding venue.

The original Georgian Ballroom complete with minstrel’s gallery, chandeliers and silk hand-painted wallpaper, is unrivalled for its elegance - it seats up to 120 guests.

The 16th century Benson room is ideal for smaller weddings or can be used alongside the ballroom for a drinks reception or a separate bar. The Benson room can also offer a private setting for dinner with friends and family the night before the wedding.

Rye is one of England’s best-preserved medieval towns - a maze of cobbled streets and tiny passage ways. There are numerous opportunities for beautiful photographs in Church Square or picturesque Mermaid Street.

Dating back from 1575 and once a coaching inn, The George in Rye is now one of England’s most highly regarded small hotels, best known for its 'informal luxury', welcoming atmosphere and fabulous food. Recent guests include George Clooney, Matt Damon, Kevin Costner and Ian McKellen.

Available on an exclusive or non-exclusive basis, The George appeals to couples looking to create a relaxed 'house-party' vibe. From intimate celebrations for 12, to receptions with all the trimmings for up to 120 guests, we offer complete flexibility and pride ourselves on our friendly, personal approach.

There are two popular package options ‘Traditional’ and ‘Indulgence’. Although the packages are used as a starting point, packages are customized to suit a couple’s individual requirements.

The kitchen team has developed a selection of seasonal Wedding Breakfast menus using ingredients on offer from the local farms and fishermen around Rye.

There is an extensive list of fine wines and Champagne including a number of new generation English wines from vineyards in East Sussex and Kent.

The 34 ensuite bedrooms are individually-designed. Every room has been stamped with an eclectic style and the little details that make all the difference. Rooms feature Vi-Spring beds, Frette linen, William Holland copper and zinc baths, power showers, REN products, flat screen TVs, Ruark iPod docks and free WIFI. Junior Suites are truly romantic. Room 41 has an enormous round bed and a staircase leading to a huge bathroom with nickel double roll-top bath. There is also a private patio for summer nights. Room 1 is very popular for honeymoons and wedding nights. It has its own front door off of the courtyard garden and all the things required for a romantic getaway including a walk-in shower with a showerhead for each of you.

The George’s facilities are completely adaptable, allowing guests the option to marry either at the local historic town hall – under a minute’s walk from the Hotel - or within the ballroom itself. If couples are blessed with sunshine, guests can enjoy a celebratory toast out in the courtyard garden while the bride and groom are whisked off to nearby Camber Sands beach for photos. During the winter months, an intimate drinks reception can be held within the elegant surroundings of the Benson Room before the grand ballroom is unveiled for the wedding breakfast.

There is a strict policy of only one wedding booking per day; it is of upmost importance that each couple has our undivided attention and service on their wedding day.

Russell & I met 8 years ago & in 2015 we had our little boy, my first Mother’s Day Russell proposed to me in March 2016, we decided we were going to get married that year. I searched and searched for ‘that special venue’ and then I came across the George in Rye and instantly fell in love, this …

was my perfect venue...it was quirky, had rooms for all my guests to stay, amazing food & wine, it ticked all the boxes. We went to view the venue and met Natalie the wedding organiser for the George & it was even more perfect, they had our December date so we booked! Natalie said the venue was even more special at xmas with all the fairy lights and xmas decorations, she did not disappoint. Natalie is a credit to the George she couldn’t do more to help & make sure your wedding day was everything and more. On the day of the wedding I can’t tell you how many guests said how beautiful the venue was & how amazing the food was, the day was literally perfect! The photographer was just bowled over with how beautiful the venue looked & was so excited to be working our wedding as she knew the pictures would shine. I wish I could say in words how special our day was and how happy we are that we found the George. I will go back to the George every year to mark our anniversary, it truly is the most beautiful venue and Natalie will ensure everything goes perfect for your day!
