City of London

City of London A City within a City. The main business district of the London Metropolis is often referred to as simply “The City” and is the central financial district. It is situated on the North side of the Thames and runs from Tower in the East to Farringdon in the west and north to Cripplegate. It’s estimated that approximately 10,000 people live in The City however, approximately half a million people work there at any one time. The area is a spectacular city landscape with buildings such as the Walke-Talkie, The Gherkin and The Cheesegrater. The Romans settled here in ancient times and built their walled settlement which encompassed one square mile. You will still hear the area referred to as the Square Mile today. The Landscape is dominated by offices and modern architecture, but there are still plenty of historic buildings jostling side by side with the skyscrapers. It makes for a very interesting backdrop. In summer the area can record higher temperatures than the surrounding areas due to the reflections from the high rise buildings. Photo by Javier Martinez via Unsplash
