Farnham

At the western edge of Surrey and sitting on the River Wey, Farnham was named by Saxons in the sixth century, but a settlement has existed here for over ten thousand years. It’s a well-preserved traditional market town, and contains Farnham Castle, originally built by the Normans but added-to and improved over centuries as the Palace of the bishops of Winchester. A public park abuts the river in town. It’s also the place where JM Barrie wrote Peter Pan. The local museum contains a varied and generalist collection of local artifacts, from archaeological finds to a collection of period costume.

Farnham Station is a little over an hour from London Waterloo on the Alton Line. Two stops away at Alton the “Watercress Line” period steam railway still operates if your party is looking for an afternoon out during their stay. By road, the town is close to the main A3 and M3 routes between London and the south coast.
