County town of Kent, known as the ‘Garden of England’, Maidstone sits on the River Medway and grew in size and importance as a commercial centre from freight traffic transported on water in the 18th and 19th centuries. It’s one of the largest shopping destinations in the south east of England, and just outside of town sits Leeds Castle, widely regarded as the most picturesque of all the castles in the UK.
