We’ve spotted something a little unusual about Dryfesdale Country House Hotel and we are about to dish the dirt! Gavin from Dryfesdale told us about a very interesting tradition… sword cutting your wedding cake! We caught up with Gavin for a quick chat over this unique idea:
Hi Gavin, there is a very interesting tradition we heard about in Dryfesdale, sword cutting your wedding cakes! Tell me, where does this tradition come from?
The tradition is a unique one of our own. We haven’t seen or taken it from anywhere else and thought it looked a good feature as well as a nice surprise for the guests and wedding couple!
So, where did Owner Glen get the idea for using real swords to cut the wedding cake?
Glen had bought 2 swords years ago when he first bought the Dryfesdale Hotel as a feature on the wall behind reception. But then, he bought a lovely painting of Paris so he took the swords down replaced them with the painting and came up with the idea of using the swords to cut the cake with!
Wow, your couples must love this quirky tradition!
We give the couples the option to use a sword. Most couples take the sword option though cause it’s a great feature and really gets the crowd going! The swords are pretty blunt and would not cut anyone except into a nicely made cake…
Sounds great! Do you have any other fun traditions at Dryfesdale Country House Hotel?
The Management team like to do the toast mastering and each of us have our own unique way of doing it to get the guests going. We like to embarrass the groom just before cutting the cake by announcing ‘people get your cameras ready and this is most likely the last time the groom is going to smile’ or when it’s the grooms speech we give him a special announcement by saying something like ‘ he is the one, the only, the groom Mr Joe Bloggs’. This gives a special effect to the day too!
