Tell us a little bit about your background…
I studied photography at Leeds Metropolitan University and then did a four year apprenticeship with a leading photographer. I have assisted and worked with scores of photographers.
I have won a medal from Sony, an award from Fuji and two prizes from Nikon.
I have had my work exhibited and published and I am a fully-qualified member of the British Institute of Professional Photography (BIPP).
How many years have you been a wedding photographer?
I have focused more on weddings in the last ten years.
What do you love about wedding photography?
I enjoy the whole day from start to finish. It’s a privilege to be allowed to capture images of a bride and groom’s special day. It’s satisfying to know that the images I create will outlive me and will be passed on to the next generation.
What makes a great wedding photo portfolio?
This is a hard one. First of all the photographer must be passionate about weddings, it needs to be a calling and not a job. The right location, clothes, makeup and hair help a lot in creating great photos for a wedding album.
It has been said that the most important items are lighting and composition. However, flagship cameras, expensive lens and portable lighting are all essential for capturing great wedding photography.
Put it this way, Hamilton would not have won the World Championship in a Ford Focus!
What advice could you give to someone looking for a wedding photographer?
It is important that you set the correct photography budget. Aim for at least £700.00 for a basic package and no more than £2,000 for a full package.
Choose a photographer who has lots of wedding photography experience, is a full-time professional photographer and is qualified by the BIPP or the Master Photographers Association (MPA).
Ideally you should look for someone who has experience of working at the venue and who dresses smartly, it is a wedding after all!
As well as looking at reviews on Google, take a look at their work through the galleries on their website.
A photographer should be open about their prices. For example, they publish their prices on the website.
You should also tell the photographer your budget and if you are spending over £1,500, haggle!
What are the best sources to find a quality wedding photographer?
Some of the best sources are the British Institute of Professional Photography, online research and Google Reviews and ‘Meet the Photographer’ features.
