Every once in a while, we read a story somewhere that moves us. It doesn’t always have to be a deep and meaningful news article or blog post, but when we feel something, we feel it.
So, when we read bride Nina Muehleman’s story about her difficulty in finding her dream wedding venue that would also have accessibility for her wheelchair, needless to say, we were taken back. Nina is a PhD student writing about Disability Culture and well as a regular blogger.
Nina begins by mentioning that as a bride, there are so many things to be anxious about. Will the dress fit? Will someone cancel at the last moment? And even the seating plan can be a stress. She mentions that “when you are a disabled bride, there are additional issues you need to think about.” Adding, “choosing a wedding venue can be a daunting and complicated process.”
Nina and her now husband Bob, viewed nine different wedding venues in total, armed with a huge checklist plenty of questions. Although she was told that all of these would be wheelchair accessible, she later realized that they wouldn’t be able to cater for her wheelchair bound guests. When they did find a suitable venue, they didn’t “quite fit in with the magical, romantic version” Bob and she had in mind.
On the last day of venue hunting (you can imagine how they could have given up at this stage), they came to see One Great George Street. Nina mentions that in the beginning she wasn’t sure as they didn’t seem to have a wheelchair accessible entrance. But, once they were shown how the stairs can recede to reveal a platform lift, their anxieties were soon settled. And because many of her guests travelled from Switzerland, being located in the heart of Westminster just seemed perfect.
While Nina was used to buildings with dusty disabled restrooms and excuses for poor accessibility in graded buildings, One Great George Street was a refreshing change.
Nina mentions that the day itself was absolutely “wonderful and magical” and describes how she was “overwhelmed with the joy and happiness that vibrated through the air”.
The best part of Nina’s post has to be how she describes One Great Gorge Street as being like “Disneyland and Hogwarts combined” as well as the gratitude for Wedding Coordinator, Tracey’s efforts.
Nina’s gown was just gorgeous with a fun dash of hot pink underneath.
