Maybe it’s because we’ve always loved Royal weddings or because of the latest I’m a Celebrity season, but we have recently rekindled our love for the highly esteemed wedding designer, David Emanuel.
This year, David has made it to the top two of “I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!” and has won over the nation all over again with his old fashioned charm and sense of humour.
The Welsh fashion legend and designer recently opened up to his fellow “I’m a Celebrity” friends over how he assumed the role that defined his career…. with Princess Diana.
The 61-year-old designer revealed on television how the iconic Diana would phone him up and say, “It’s me” as well as how keeping his lips sealed during the project was one of the hardest things he has ever had to do.
Emanuel, who had previous designed several pieces for Diana (including the famous black dress before the wedding) said: “ I picked up the phone in the studio and she said, ‘It’s me’.
David mentioned: “She never said Lady Diana. I always used to say, ‘Hello me’. She said, ‘I’m just wondering, would you do the honour of designing my wedding gown?’. And I said, ‘Course I’d love to’.”
At the time, Valentino was said to be the designer who would be putting together the esteemed wedding gown. With the press desperate to confirm a designer, Emanuel’s nerves began to kick in, confessing that he even thought it was a hoax:
“So I thought Christ perhaps it’s a hoax call. I’m getting paranoid and I’m thinking perhaps it wasn’t her. Perhaps it’s somebody playing a joke.”
“It was an extraordinary time. Larger than life. And since then, you name it. Madonna, Sigourney Weaver, Jane Seymour, Elizabeth Taylor. They all want to come in and get a piece of the action.”
