The argument for or against gift lists are continuous… Those in favour will always say how they’re practical and save money, others say they are assuming and predictable. If you’re not sure whether or not you want to use have a gift list, check out these pros and cons:
Pros
- It’s a chance to let your guests help you decorate your home.
- The list will have what ever your tastes entail.
- Your guests don’t need to stress over what to get you… it’s all there!
- No re-gifting or trying to return things you don’t like.
- You won’t end up with an endless amount of toasters.
- Useful for couples who’ve lived together for a while and might have already accumulated most of their household items.
- It gives your guests a chance to buy a gift that they’re not aware you might need!
Cons
- It takes the element of surprise out for the couple.
- Guests may think it is greedy to give a list to their guests.
- Some guests don’t like the idea of the couple knowing how much was spent on their gift.
- The cheaper gifts may get snapped up quickly, leaving the most expensive items to the rest of your guests
Although, these may all be good reasons not to have a gift list, try comprising with these tips:
- Personalise your items with reasons for your choices. This will help your guests to make it more personal for them.
- Make sure your gifts cover a range of price points and for the more expensive items, let your guests split up the cost if possible.
- Let it be clear that you gift list is optional and they can definitely purchase off the list if they have a gift in mind.
