We have noticed something interesting in last week’s Spice Girls viral video with Yanis Marshall, love padlocks! Love padlocks or love locks as they are sometimes known as, are custom padlocks fixed to a public structure (commonly bridges) by sweethearts in locations around the world to symbolize their love.
In Europe, love padlocks started appearing in the early 2000s, but the origins of the craze are unknown. Some say the trend originated from the Italian novel Ho Volgia de ti. In the novel, love padlocks are traced all the way back to before World War II in Siberia.
Although a fairly new tradition, some locations have given the padlocks a legendary and superstitious character. In Taiwan, love padlocks are also known as wish locks and local legend holds that the magnetic field generated by trains underneath can cause energy to accumulate in these locks to fulfill these wishes.
In Uruguay, a plaque fixed in front of the Montevideo mountain reads, “ The legend of this young fountain tells us that if a lock with the initials of two people in love is placed in it, they will return together to the fountain and their love will be forever locked”….. Awww!
A great honeymoon idea, not only because you can remember it forever but revisiting it will be a sentimental treat too.
