They say a mother is never more proud than she is on her daughter’s wedding day – and they are right. Seeing your little girl walk down the isle and become a wife is a very happy (and emotional) experience for any mother. As every woman knows this to be the case, you will find most of your female guests will have as much of an eye on you as they do the blushing bride! So you have to look your best. What will you wear? You will probably change your mind a dozen times between now and the big day, but fear not, here we have some tips to choosing your mother of the bride dress:
Consider your style
This may sound like a given, but you would be surprised how many times the mother of the bride tries too hard to go all out for her daughter’s wedding and ends up losing sight of her own personal style, and what suits her best. Be true to yourself, if you’ve never been comfortable in a strapless dress, or sleeveless dress, don’t wear one on the big day. If you’re more traditional and conservative, dress traditionally and conservative. What you wear is a statement about who you are, so you’ll look best stating who you are rather than trying to be different.
Complement the colour scheme
You should try to wear a colour which compliments the colour of the wedding, though you must be careful not to clash with it. Be careful not to clash with the bride either – so avoid white and ivory! Bright seasonal colours are great for the mother of the bride if bright colours are your thing. If you’ve never been into bright colours, you could always avoid them for your dress colour but add colours using accessories.
Flatter yourself
This is very important. Know your body type and wear what works for you. There are dresses made for you no matter what size or shape you are. Whether you are tall or short, petite, curvy or plus sized, there are dresses made to flatter you!
Be seasonal
Be in style for the time of year. A nice summer dress will look great in summer, but not so much in winter. If the wedding is in a hot climate, be sure to take this into consideration. December may be cold in your country – but may be hot at this wedding destination. You don’t want to be struggling to concentrate on the wedding ceremony because you are dreaming of jumping into a cold pool! Also beware of cliff side weddings where there can be a strong breeze – that lovely hat will become more of a pain than its worth!
Be comfortable!
Whenever you are attending any special occasion you must be comfortable in what you’re wearing. This is never more true on a wedding day, especially for someone as important as the mother of the bride. These days are long, you may spend up to (or more than) 12 hours in your outfit so must dress for comfort as well as style. Don’t wear shoes you can’t walk in, this could prove costly. If you like to dance, look at mother of the bride dresses which will allow you to do this. Always think comfort as well as style when choosing an outfit for this particular day!
