The bride and groom often worrying throughout their wedding day if their guests are enjoying themselves and are having fun. Weddings are long days with plenty going on, so why not add a little extra entertainment to the day and hire a magician! A magician will certainly keep your guests laughing and entertained while you are waiting for the wedding meal or whatever the case may be! Meet Alan Mylecraine, The Wedding Awards ‘North West Winner for Wedding Entertainment 2013’.
I offer two acts, a 2 hour close-up magic package and/or a 45 minute stand-up comedy cabaret. The close-up magic package features 2 hours of walk around magic performing for your guests at their tables during the wedding breakfast, during the wedding photographs or at the evening reception as the evening guests arrive. As the title suggests, this is close-up magic, happening right in front of you, and more often than not, actually in your hands. Everyone has seen magic on TV, but not many people have experienced magic live and certainly not where they are involved in the effect. I can help make the wedding unique, I always hold a meeting with my clients to ascertain their requirements, if there is a particular theme for their wedding, if there is i will try and incorporate that within my act too.
2. Where did it all begin.. What inspired you to become a magician?
I have always been interested in magic, as far back as I can remember, I used to watch Paul Daniel and Wayne Dobson every Saturday evening, and for a birthday I received a Paul Daniels magic set and also a basic book on magic, from then on I was hooked.
3. You are based in Lancashire, can you travel further for a wedding if it were needed?
I do travel throughout the UK (occasionally Europe) performing, not just weddings, I also entertain at corporate events and private parties.
4. What is your favourite magic trick?
I have many favourite effects which I like to perform, everything in my act is honed over 100’s of performances to ensure I know every effect inside out, and this enables me to really work on the presentation of the trick, so that my clients experience my act at its peak. With the close-up magic I really enjoy using playing cards, these are an every day object which everyone has at home, but to pick up a deck and perform miracles and hear the reaction of my audience is a wonderful feeling.
5. Why do you think a wedding couple would enjoy having a magician at their wedding?
A magician can really make a difference during your wedding day. Your wedding is a fantastic experience, but as the bride and groom, it is a very busy day, and everyone wants your attention. During the wedding pictures you could be gone for up to 2 hours having photographs taken, and whist immediate family will be involved in some of these, there will be some guests who may only feature in one or two pictures, and this can prove to be a worry for the bride and groom. Booking a magician can ease this worry, as a magician will keep ALL your guests entertained during this period, therefore relieving any worries you may have had, but this also shows your guests that you have thought about them by providing unique entertainment for their pleasure. By having a magician entertain during the wedding breakfast or early evening reception as your guests arrive can really add a lot to the atmosphere, my magic involves a lot of magic as well as humour, and for the bride and groom to hear their guests laughing and enjoying themselves at the other side of the room really eases any worries they may have had about trying to keep everyone happy and occupied.
When I perform at a wedding, I always include a ‘Command Performance’ for the newly weds, this is to ensure they have the opportunity to experience my magic, I also perform an effect exclusively for them which will leave them with a unique souvenir of their big day.
6. What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
I enjoy spending time with my family, I am a qualified technical scuba diving instructor and I also enjoy the outdoors and nature. I am a huge fan of comedy with over 200 dvds and videos on stand-up comedy along with countless books on the subject. I also have an extensive magic library and I am always learning new effects for inclusion within my act.
7. What famous magician would you most look up to?
Well, going back to my influences during my early stages of magic I would have to say Paul Daniels and Wayne Dobson and more recently Derren Brown, however, there are many magicians I look up to within the magic fraternity which aren’t necessarily household names, including Juan Tamariz, David Williamson, Rene Levand and Andy Nyman.
8. You also offer a comedy cabaret, tell me more…
The comedy cabaret I offer is a 45 minute act with plenty of audience participation and lots of verbal and visual gags. This has been worked 100’s of times so that it is a fast paced and modern act which is ideal for various functions, be it for an intimate wedding setting of 30 to a bigger event of 200-300 people and everything in between too. As i mentioned earlier, I am a huge fan of comedy, and there is nothing quite like the buzz you get from hearing an audience laughing at your jokes, or applauding your magic, and I always hear an audible gasp with the effect I finish the cabaret with and that is something I always enjoy.
