We are obsessed with any wedding venue that has history or a background to it. So when we heard the stunning Talbot Hotel was apparently haunted, we knew we had to find out more!
There have been many ghosts reported at the Talbot Hotel but one of the most talked about is Mary, Queen of Scots. Her ghost has been said to appear in a long white dress and can be found standing at the top of the stairs or by the window of the conference room opposite. The staircase and windows where the ghost appears were bought from Fotheringhay when the castle was demolished. It has been said that Mary had received the news that she would be executed at the top of these very stairs.
Many guests and staff have reported some strange goings; in particular, the bedroom that is reportedly haunted by her being extremely cold even with heating on. Maids and cleaners have also reported a feeling of a hand being placed on their shoulder and pictures falling off walls for no particular reason. Staff have also mentioned Mary’s ghost is “not destructive but does from time-to-time like us to know she is there.”
One story we heard from a staff member (that totally gave us the heebbie jeebbies) was that of a cleaner working near to the Mary Queen of Scots bedroom who could quite clearly hear crying from the room. On checking with housekeeping she was advised the room was vacant, so on knocking first she proceeded in to the room to see a woman in white dress and hat crying in the corner of the room. On asking her if she was OK, she looked straight at her and then disappeared. A strong cup of tea was needed for the cleaner!
