Every once in a while, we all need a little break. And we have to say, anytime we see a Bank Holiday on the horizon, we find some excuse to immerse ourselves in very important research on gorgeous getaways. This week, we’re day dreaming about Tylney Hall Hotel in Hampshire.
When you arrive at Tylney Hall, you are immediately greeted by our famous red wood trees, which line the drive. Next, park your car and begin your exploration of their beautiful 66 acre estate, lovingly restored by Estate Manager Paul Tattersdill and his team, over the past 25 years.
The formal Italian Garden, originally laid out by Seldon Wornum has not always looked as immaculate as it does today. During Tylney’s time as a school (from 1948-84,) the Italian lawn was replaced by tennis courts and the garden that you see today is in fact completely re-constructed. However, two original features in this garden are our stone Gazebo’s, (licensed for marriage ceremonies since 2012) which provide the perfect setting for an intimate outdoor wedding.
If you take a stroll through a wooded area and cross the bridge at the bottom of the boathouse lake, you will find one of the most romantic spots in the grounds of Tylney Hall. A bench with a sweeping view up to the main house provides a memorable setting for many couples and we have heard that it is a popular proposal location too!
To the right of the lake, you will pass our Rose and Azalea Gardens. These gardens were both originally set out on a cartwheel style with paths radiating outwards. In 2012, their gardening team planted 125 plants in the inner ring and more than 300 plants will be planted in the outer ring over the next 3 years. This area of the grounds has such a magical feeling to it, particularly when the wild orchids are in bloom during summer.
Their award winning outdoor swimming pool is the most popular area for guests to soak up the summer sun. However, it was once the Dutch Garden, laid out by Seldon Wornum in which many ornate figurines stood amongst the ornamental flowers.
Just around the corner, you will find the Glasshouses, which are listed buildings in their own right. The central section constructed from galvanised steel pre-date the existing main house (1876). These are still used by our Gardening team to grown our own plants. It is here that you will also find the walled kitchen gardens, designed by Robert Wier Schultz. A collection of fruit trees and a large variety of herbs grow here today, that are used throughout their cuisine by their head chef, Stephen Hine and his team.
Towards the edge of the Tylney estate, you will find a beautiful apple orchard. This part of the garden has more of a rural appearance to it and a gorgeous spot for wedding photos.
The Water Gardens, designed by the world renowned Garden Designer Gertrude Jekyll are another romantic area in the Tylney Hall grounds. The garden consists of two lakes linked by two water courses, which consist of many pools and water falls. There are many spots to relax and enjoy the view of the lakes, but beware of a extremely friendly family of ducks!
