Getting Married: Destination Weddings in the UK

We are constantly raving about our dream wedding locations and how amazing it could be to have a destination wedding somewhere. Well, for those who are looking to get married abroad in the UK, we have to say, it sounds like a dream. If you have some relatives in the UK or you’ve always loved the idea of marrying in a castle; it could be an amazing idea!

But, before you go searching for beautiful venues, there are special requirements for citizens of other countries who wish to marry in the UK. Unless you’re a UK citizen or marrying one, there can be a wait on tying the knot. A waiting and residency period lasts at least 22 days before a wedding in England and Wales.

7 days is required when filing a notice of your intention to marry. If neither of you are UK citizens, you may both need to be present to file this notice.

After this 7 days notice, a further 15 days needs to pass before your wedding can take place.

If you’re looking to get married in Scotland, the rules are slightly different. There is no residency requirement but you do need to file your notice of intention to marry. The up side to this is that you don’t need to both be present at the registrar’s office to do so.
